SSI Raises $15,350 for March for Babies at Jennings Beach

SHELTON, Conn., May 7, 2015 – On Sunday, May 3, the March of Dimes Greater Fairfield County Division hosted its March for Babies walkathon to raise money and awareness to help give every baby a healthy start in life. More than 20 SSI employees, friends and family raised $15,350 for this year’s event held at Jennings Beach in Fairfield, Conn.

“We couldn’t have asked for better weather and the turnout was fabulous,” said Philippe Bourdon, a Southington resident and SSI employee who participated in the event with his wife Cidalia Bourdon and two daughters. “This was the second year Team SSI participated in this important event. And because of SSI’s corporate match, we were able to increase our donations by more than 50 percent over last year.”

“SSI employees are a dedicated team who work to improve their lives and the lives of others through events like this and other fundraising activities,” said Chris Fanning, president and CEO of SSI. “I am proud of their efforts and even more proud of the work the March of Dimes has done since FDR first established the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in 1937 which later became known as ‘March of Dimes’.”

Each year in Connecticut nearly 40,000 babies are born. One in 10 babies are born too soon, and one in seven infant deaths is attributed to a birth defect. The mission of the March of Dimes is to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through research, education, advocacy and community programs. Funds raised in the March for Babies support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. Funds will also be used to bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.
